Saturday dawned nice and warm, foggy and no wind. Not what the name implies - roaring winds and cold water to test the sailors at the end of the season. The weather forcast is calling for chance of thunderstorms and winds 40-60 km/h. Hah. The wind teases off and on all day - barely 5 knots most of the time but the fog just doesn't go away. Not good, so abandon at 14:00. Of course, the wind finally comes up at 16:30 at about 20 knots. A couple of the Mystere's go out to play in it, the rest of us are waiting for the dinner, which was fabulous.
Sunday, get woken up to a great thunderstorm which passes by. More breakfast goodies from Chris and Margret. Good, there is still some wind leftover, lets get out there. Forecast is for the wind to switch from the SW to the N. Hum, more wind out here than it seemed on the beach. Some sailors decide it's too much wind for them and return to the beach. With the wind from the SW for several hours, we have some nice big rollers, max. about 3 feet. Yipee! Off we go. Boy, are we all hanging back at the start. Interesting tacks up at the windward mark as people take longer and get in irons etc. Surfing downwind is great. The Dart 20 ends up breaking 3 of his battens and calls it quits. And Harry decides his sail needs some more washing. Fewer numbers to start the 2nd race. Wind is lighening up which means it's harder to plow through the waves. Start off race 3, just as the wind starts it's shift to the north. Abandon, reset the course, start again. Wind picks up again but does have some holes. End of racing. Get the travellers packed up, Clive and family have the BBQ going, get the scoring printed up (opps, used 1997 portsmouth numbers) and had out the trophies and giveaways. Thanks race committee (Irene and gang) so that I could race.
Smaller numbers this year - a good number of boats off at the Hobie 16 Continentals and figure the call for rain on the weekend scared off some. Jeremy will be running this next year - and he is planning on returning it to the old days - costumes and some intriquing rules. Sounds interesting, so hope to see you next year. Nancy.
