1999 'ROUND THE BAY RACE

A 21-MILE RACE AROUND MAUMEE BAY

DATE: SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 1999

CLASSES: ANY MULTIHULL -Three classes per Ohio Catamaran Racing Association (OCRA) Portsmouth ranges, as below. We can accomodate boats that are not class legal!

LOCATION: Maumee Bay at the Western end of Lake Erie

COURSE: Starting at Lost Peninsula, rounding: Grassy Island at the mouth of the Maumee river, a mark in front of Maumee Bay State Park, the Toledo Harbor Light and Turtle Island, finishing back at Lost Peninsula. Course may be reversed. Course board with details and photos posted near registration.

SCHEDULE: 8:00 - Registration

9:00 - Competitors' meeting. Safety inspection immediately thereafter.

10:00 - Start for boats rating above .730

10:30 - Start for boats rating .675 through .730

11:00 - Start for boats rating below .675

Note: The launching area requires single-file launching. Rig early to be sure you can get on the water in time for your start - get in line only when you are ready to launch so that you do not hold-up the process.

REQUIRED MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Seaworthy boat, life jacket and whistle for each sailor, throwable, tow line (minimum 50 feet long and 1/4 inch diameter).

AWARDS: Awards in each class, based on the number of entrants. There will also be a first-to-finish award and something for everyone.

COST: $15.00 per single-handed boat. $20.00 per double-handed boat.

MEALS: Plan on taking something to eat and drink on the race course. Lunch provided after racing.

OTHER FEATURES: A great view of the race course from the starting area. (Shore crew, bring binoculars!).

A good introduction to long distance beach cat racing. Guaranteed opportunity to use your spinnaker and/or reacher sails. Note: ratings adjustments only for sails used, not for sails carried.

DIRECTIONS: Yippee! After three years, no more local interstate construction!

From the north, take I-75 South, exit at Summit Street before you reach the state line. Go 2.5 miles, turn left (east) at 131st Street which turns into Edgewater Drive in 0.5 miles. In 1 more mile, turn right (across from The River Cafe and Webbers Restaurant) to enter Lost Peninsula Marina. Drive straight to the water, follow the road to the catamaran rigging area.

From other directions, take I-75 North, exit at Ottawa River Road. Follow the river 1.3 miles to Summit Street. Turn left (north) on Summit, go 0.3 miles, right at 131st Street. Then as above in italics.
